Medications such as steroids

How can you find out if you suffer from
osteoporosis? The bone density test, particularly using the DEXA (Dual Energy X
Ray Absorptiometry) technique can evaluate your fracture risk and is very helpful in
determining whether or not therapy is needed.
Here at Piedmont Obstetrics and
Gynecology we have a
Norland Excell Bone Densitometry System
which can
accurately measure the bone density of both the spine and
the hip. The test is painless, and uses extremely low
dosage of radiation In fact, DEXA scanning exposes patients to less
radiation than a chest x-ray or a coast-to-coast airline flight.
We feel it is an important addition to the overall
health care of our patients. Ask any one of our
practitioners if you're a candidate for bone density testing.

Dexa scan Instructions:
If you have an appointment for a
dexa scan please do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours prior to the
test. If possible wear clothing without snaps, zippers or buttons.
This will help to eliminate the need to change into a patient gown before
testing.
