At Piedmont Obstetrics and Gynecology we realize that we are often the primary care giver of women, and for that reason we offer general medical care as well as a comprehensive line of services in the field of gynecology.  If any health problems fall outside our expertise we are more than happy to assist you in locating an appropriate specialist or family physician.

We can provide not only routine pap smears, but also the more recently recommended "thin prep" which is currently being touted as a more accurate test . We have state of the art equipment to perform colposcopy, cryosurgery, and LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure).  In this way we can diagnose and treat any of your pap smear abnormalities in the comfort and privacy of our office.

All of our practitioners can   provide infertility services including hormonal evaluations, diagnostic testing, and treatment with ovulation inducing medications and/or surgical correction. Dr. McDonell particularly, has many years of experience and excellent results with tubal microsurgery, including tubal reanastomosis (reconnecting previously tied tubes).

Treatment for a variety of hormonal imbalances (such as those involved in  menopause and the perimenopausal state), polycystic ovarian syndrome (Stein Leventhal syndrome), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and adolescent gynecology can all be provided. We also have considerable experience with both medical and surgical treatments of endometriosis, pelvic pain and menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding).   We are well trained in all aspects of laparoscopic and laser surgery.

While we are not cancer specialists (oncologists) per se, the care of gynecologic patients with cancer is very much a part of our practice.  We commonly perform all of the diagnostic testing as well as the surgical therapy.  Only in the most advanced cases, is referral to another institution necessary.  This, of course, allows the patient  to be treated by a physician with whom she already feels comfortable, and to stay close to home. Our physicians do have a close working relationship with the gynecologic oncologists at Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center and are free to  consult with them 24 hrs a day.  In this way you are assured of receiving the most up-to-date information and treatment possible.
